in april of 2008, i went up into the tien shan mountains in kazakhstan
on horseback in pursuit of wild tulips to shoot for michael pollan's film botany
of desire. i found nearly twenty species of wild tulips in every array of color, shape
and form - hybrids and mutants, all pushing showy color out of the grey rock proclaiming their readiness to travel - bulb suitcases packed and ready to go - just
as they had called out to the travelers of the silk route over a thousand years
ago. these are the faces of the people that I met along the way.
